Getting Around

Orientation

Most ships will dock at the modern Canada Place cruise ship facility, which is located in the city center and near excellent hotels, shopping, dining and entertainment venues. You'll know you're there when you see the distinctive white sails that fly over the structure. The Canada Place facility also houses a five-star hotel and the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre.

If you're not docking at Canada Place, you'll dock at the overflow facility at Ballantyne, which is located just minutes away from Canada Place.

Neighborhoods of Vancouver

Vancouver has been called a "city of neighborhoods," each with a distinct character and ethnic mix. That's just one of the things about Vancouver that makes it a great place to visit.

Downtown This is the core commercial section of Vancouver, and extends northwest to the harbor and Stanley Park from Homer street. It's where you'll find the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Pacific Centre mall, the public library and many hotels. The streets with the most shopping and touristic interest include Robson Street, where you'll find trendy shops, restaurants and bars; Georgia Street, which is parallel with Robson, but two blocks north (Georgia Street leads directly into the entrance to Stanley Park); and Granville Street, which is perpendicular to Robson and Georgia Streets, and is home to many shops, bars and theaters. Taking Granville Street across downtown will get you to Granville Island.

West End Although this densely populated area is still technically located in the downtown area, its character is different than that of more commercial downtown. Its border begins west of Burrard Street in the direction of Stanley Park, stretching between English Bay and Coal Harbour. This was Vancouver's original upscale neighborhood when it was created in the 1890s.

Gastown This is the oldest part of Vancouver, having been built in 1886 after a fire destroyed the area. Here you'll find cobblestone streets and Victorian-era buildings housing art galleries, boutiques and souvenir shops. Gastown is also the home to the Gastown Steam Clock, operated by a steam engine, located at the corner of Water and Cambie streets.

Chinatown It's the third largest Chinatown in North America (after New York and San Francisco), and a fun place to visit. The Chinese immigrants who came to Vancouver in the 1980s and 1990s settled in Richmond, not Chinatown, so what you have here is a collection of low-rise buildings with the sidewalk markets spilling out into the streets. It is home to Cantonese-speaking residents. On the periphery of Chinatown is the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Yaletown & False Creek Yaletown is Vancouver's trendy and upscale renovated warehouse district. This fresh urban neighborhood is an easy walk from the center of downtown or a short AquaBus ferry ride from Granville Island. Yaletown's converted heritage buildings are home to some of city's top fashion and design boutiques, as well as cutting-edge restaurants and bars. Old loading docks act as giant sidewalks and create a unique setting for strolling, shopping, or lounging at one of the many outdoor patios.

Granville Island Located across downtown from Canada Place, Granville Island is a great place to spend some time. Formerly a warehouse and industrial district, Granville Island has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind urban experience. Here you'll find art galleries, a farmer's market, a shopping mall, theaters and restaurants. The Granville Island Public Market is a big draw, with locals coming to buy their groceries from the local growers, while visitors enjoy the Vancouver ambience, shopping and restaurants.

Transportation

Walking in Vancouver Vancouver is a fun town to walk in. From Canada Place, getting to Stanley Park takes just 15 to 20 minutes. And the only way to see the shops on Robson, take in downtown Vancouver's attractions, and experience Granville Island is on foot. So put on your walking shoes and enjoy Vancouver.

Public Bus System TransLink is the Vancouver area rapid transit system. For C$9.00, you can buy a Day Pass that will take you anywhere in the city by bus, on the Seabus ferry to North Vancouver, or on the Skytrain, which will take you south to Richmond and points beyond.

Taxis If you're in a popular downtown area, or at a hotel, you'll be able to find a taxi easily. Most of the taxis, however, are radio-dispatched. In-town fares generally cost between $5.00 and $10.00. As of May 2009, the re-routing of cruise ships from Mexican tours to the Pacific Northwest has dramatically increased the number of daily visitors to the city and has caused a shortage of taxis.

Aquabus Rain or shine, the rainbow-colored Aquabus Ferries continuously criss-cross Vancouver's scenic False Creek area, carrying both foot passengers and cyclists. Vancouver's downtown neighborhoods, parks, attractions and hotels are all within walking distance of an Aquabus ferry dock. A really good printable map of the city and the Aquabus route is available here
Tel: (604) 689-5858.

Vancouver Trolley The trolleys are replicas of turn-of-the-century, San Francisco-style trolley cars. You can get on and off at the many stops along each route. Victoria Trolleys offers two routes: the Blue Loop and the Red Loop; each route takes about an hour, if you don't get off en route. The trolleys can be picked up at 20-minute intervals. You can board the Vancouver Trolley in front of the Canada Place cruise ship terminal. Tel: (604) 801-5515.

The Blue Loop takes you north along Coal Harbour, into Stanley Park, then south along English Bay to False Harbour, and finally across town back to Canada Place. The Red Loop takes you into downtown, where you'll see the Art Gallery, the Vancouver Museum, the Maritime Museum and the Space Centre. It also stops at the entrance to Granville Island, Yaletown, Library Square, Chinatown and Gastown before returning to Canada Place.

Shopping

Vancouver is a great place to shop. Canada's third-largest city offers a cornucopia of unique shopping options.

FYI, you'll be paying two sales taxes when you buy something in Vancouver. The first is the PST, or Provincial Sales Tax. The current rate in Vancouver is 7.5%, and is charged on goods, not services. The second tax is the GST, or General Sales Tax, assessed by the Federal Government. The current rate is 7%, and is charged on every financial transaction.

To see the locations of the recommended shops listed below, see our Recommended Vancouver Shops map.

Water Street in Gastown is where you'll find interesting objets d'art, antiques, souvenirs and retro fashion boutiques.

If you're looking for European fashions, gift shops and serious people watching, your best bet is Robson Street, between Burrard and Jervis Streets. There are over 200 shops along this three-block pedestrian-oriented street.

Main Street, between 19th Avenue and 27th Avenue, is known for its antique stores.

Vancouver's Granville Island is where you'll find any number of art galleries, shops, boutiques and restaurants.

For serious art lovers, you need to get over to South Granville Gallery Row for a visit to the 30 art and antique dealers with works on display. A taxi is probably the best way to get there, but you could also take a bus; the district is located south of Granville Island.

Parks & Gardens in Vancouver

Stanley Park
West End
Vancouver's first park and one of the city's main tourist attractions, Stanley Park is an evergreen oasis of 1,000 acres (400 hectares) close to the downtown core. Its natural west coast atmosphere offering a backdrop of majestic cedar, hemlock and fir trees embraces visitors and transports them to an environment rich in tranquility. The park abounds in wildlife, and it is also the location of the Vancouver Aquarium (see below). The totem poles in the Totem Garden should not be missed. Hiking and biking trails are well marked, and the park also has several restaurants. If the weather's particularly nice, you may want to bring a picnic lunch to the park. Here's a good printable map of the park you can take with you.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden
578 Carrall Street
Chinatown
The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is the first full-size Chinese, or "scholars" garden built outside of China. The garden was built in 1985-1986, and opened on April 24, 1986, in time for Expo 86. Because the climate in Vancouver is similar to that of Suzhou, many of the same plant varieties are found in the garden as in its Suzhou counterparts. The plants were chosen according to their blossom schedules in order to emphasize seasonal changes, especially the "awakening" in spring. They are also selected to invoke the symbolic, historical, and literary meaning of each plant and are used sparingly, in contrast to western gardens, and provide color through all the seasons. Guided tours are available, and included in the price of admission. Open during the summer from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm.
