Juneau is a great place to get out and explore.

  1. Pay a visit to Mendenhall Glacier. It's one of Alaska's most accessible glaciers.

  2. Go on a whale watching exploration. During the summer months, all the whale watching operators offer a "whales guaranteed" tour. This is an experience like no other.

  3. Soar over the area's glaciers on a Flightseeing trip. From the takeoff to the landing, this is an incredible experience.

Cruise Ships in Juneau

Your ship will make port at the Juneau cruise ship docks, which are located at the southern end of the downtown area. The cruise ship docks are directly across from the Mt. Roberts tramway. It's a short walk to the city's shopping, dining and historic areas.

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the biggest draws in Juneau for tourists. It's located about 12 miles north of the downtown area. If you plan on doing some fishing or whale watching, you'll more than likely leave from Auke Bay, which is a 25-30 minute drive north of the downtown area. Most excursion operators will pick you up near the Mount Robert Tramway parking lot, which is across the road from the Juneau cruise ship docks.

Cruise passengers are welcome in Juneau, as there are almost a million of them visiting town during the summer, and they bring in a lot of money into the local economy.

Walking

Walking is one of the best ways to see downtown Juneau. Just put on your best walking shoes and go...but remember to bring your umbrella.

Juneau Trolley

The Go! Historic City and Trolley Tour offers a 45 minute scenic tour of downtown Juneau and Douglas Island. The driver/guide tells you all about the history of Alaska's capital city, points out buildings of historical and architectural interest and discusses the history of the Treadwell gold mine. You'll travel past Alaska's oldest operating hotel, the Capitol building, the Governor's Mansion and over the Juneau-Douglas bridge. You can also be dropped off in town to visit local art galleries, shops and restaurants. The cost is $19.00 for adults, $12.00 for children. It operates on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The Red Trolley City Tour offers a 45 minute scenic tour of downtown Juneau and Douglas Island. This fully narrated Hop-On Hop-Off tour lets you stop and shop the heart of Juneau; stops include the Capitol Building, the City and State Museum and the Governor's Mansion, plus you'll take the trip over the Juneau-Douglas bridge to Douglas Island. The Red Trolley runs every 30 minutes. The cost is $20, with a two passenger minimum Tour does not include admissions to museums.

Capital Transit Bus System

Capital Transit is Juneau's bus system; it offers an inexpensive and scenic way to go from the downtown area to the Mendenhall Valley as well as Douglas Island. The ride from downtown to Mendenhall Glacier takes over an hour. The fare is only $2.00 per ride--a true bargain in pricey Alaska!

Express Bus to Mendenhall Glacier

Mendenhall Glacier Transit operates the "Glacier Express" service that takes you directly from the downtown area to the Mendenhall Glacier. The "Bright Blue Bus" run every 30 minutes beginning at 9:00 am until 6:00 pm on most days. The cost is $16 round trip.

Taxis

Capital Cab/EverGreen Taxi not only offers taxi services within the Juneau area, but also provides an alternative to pre-booked package tours. They offer a charter Rate at $70 per hour for the taxi (not per person). Drivers are locals, whose knowledge of the city, attractions and surroundings far exceeds that of many of the summer tour guides.

Renting a Car

Renting a car in Juneau can prove to be a good option, especially if you're planning to visit a number of locations in the area, and you're traveling with a party of 3 or more. Here's a list of rental car agencies that make renting a car easy for cruise ship passengers:

Juneau Car Rental Company. This locally-owned company provides a full range of automobiles, SUVs, trucks and vans. They also have a convenient location within walking distance of the cruise ship docks.

Avis. Avis recently opened a downtown office that is within walking distance of the cruise ship docks. Located in the Goldbelt Building, at 51 Egan Drive, this location is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Billing themselves as "Nature's Fish Store," Taku specializes in selling fresh and processed salmon, halibut and crab. Alaska State Museum
As the official repository of the state's history, the Alaska State Museum is charged with collecting and interpreting a wealth of ethnographic and historical material. From an Aleut thimble basket to the life-sized eagle tree, the Alaska State Museum offers visitors a chance to "see" all the state within four walls. Summer hours: open daily, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, children 18 and under are free.

Juneau-Douglas City Museum
Located across the street from the Alaska State Capital building, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum features exhibits on the city's gold mining heritage. The East Gallery also features a 5X7 foot relief map of Juneau's topography. If you want to better understand the city's history, you can take in the 26 minute long video Juneau: City Built on Gold. The museum's adjacent park has two totem poles; it was here on the 4th of July, 1959 that the Alaska state flag was raised, celebrating Alaskan statehood. Summer hours: open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is $4.00.

Last Chance Mining Museum
Located in the former Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company's historic Compressor Building, which was used by the mining company from 1912 until 1944, the Last Chance Mining Museum features original tools and machines from what was once the world's largest and most advanced hardrock gold mine. Summer hours: open daily, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Admission is $4.00.

Cycle Alaska
Cycle Alaska offers two popular tours. Their Bike and Brew Glacier View tour, a 4-hour, 8½ mile ride from the Chapel by the Lake to Merchants Wharf in downtown Juneau, costs $99 for adults, and $59 for kids aged 10 to 12. Their Bike and Tram Mountain Adventure tour, a 4½- hour, 9¼ mile ride from the Eaglecrest Ski Area on Douglas Island and a ride up the Mount Roberts Tramway, costs $119 for adults, and $73 for kids aged 10 to 12.

Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure
Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure is a botanical garden located on 50 acres in the rainforest of the Tongass National Forest. The facility offers unique landscaping, floral design and scenic vistas of the area. Guests travel in covered 6- or 18-person trams through the rainforest on pathways while your guide offers in-depth insight into the rainforest. Exquisitely designed landscapes complement the bubbling waterfalls, ponds, and streams flowing throughout the property. After navigating the rainforest with your personal guide, you are met with spectacular views of the Mendenhall Valley at 580 feet atop Thunder Mountain. Juneau Rainforest Garden
Juneau Rainforest Gardens is the brainchild of Juneau residents Jane and Jeff Svinicki, who have created an intimate botanical oasis amid the lush rainforest. Here you can embark on a 15-minute self-guided stroll through the beautiful greenery, encountering an array of wildflowers, mushrooms, ferns, swamp cabbage, a moss-covered forest floor and spawning salmon (in season). Visitors are treated to an al fresco snack at the facility's picnic tables, and then have your questions answered by the resident hosts.

Captain Toni Wisner is one of the few female charter captains in Alaska. In addition to their half- and full-day fishing trips, HiTime has introduced a full-day "half and half" trip, where you'll spend 4 hours fishing and 4 hours on a wildlife watching expedition. Their boat, the HiTime, is a 28-foot welded aluminum sport fishing vessel built by Boulton Powerboats in 2006. Powered by twin state of the art 250 hp. Yamaha outboards, she cruises at near 30 mph. A fast trip to and return from the fishing grounds means more time fishing and less time running. Offered by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, this 1-hour walking tour is offered mid-May thru mid-September. Tours depart at 1:30 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Tickets are available at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, which is also the starting point of the walking tour. Price is $20 for adults, and $15 for children under 18 years of age. Admission to the museum is included in the ticket price.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center
The Mendenhall Glacier is one of Southeast Alaska's most popular attractions. Located a short drive from downtown Juneau in the Tongass National Forest, the glacier is twelve miles long from its origin on the Juneau Icefield to its terminus at Mendenhall Lake. At the Visitor Center, operated by the U.S. Forest Service, you can explore models of Mendenhall Glacier and an icefield research station, or hike one of the many trails emanating from the visitor center. Summer Hours (May through October): open daily from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm. Visitor Center Admittance fee is $3.00.

Macaulay Salmon Hatchery Located just 2.5 miles from downtown, the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery enables visitors to learn first-hand about Alaska's salmon. A knowledgeable tour guide explains the fascinating life of the Pacific salmon and the workings of the hatchery. Inside the facility, visitors will find museum-like interpretive displays, saltwater aquariums and The Salmon Shop, which features local salmon products and novelties. Mount Roberts Tramway Located directly across from the Cruise Ship docks, the Mount Roberts Tramway is Juneau's top-rated attraction. You'll ride an enclosed tramway gondola through the rain forest to the 1,800-foot level of Mount Roberts for one of the most expansive views in Southeast Alaska: Chilkat Mountains to the north, Gastineau Channel to the south, west to Douglas Island, and east into Silver Bow Basin, where gold was discovered in 1880.
